Read Religion Chapter, focusing on western perspectives of religion, symbolism, linguistic determinism, and the cultural universals as described in the text.
Then, work in groups (4) to complete a comparative study of two religions: one from a Western society and one from a non-Western society. In the comparison, the cultural universals need to be identified. Additionally, the function of the belief system in each society needs to be addressed, including social function. Also include a summary of how the belief system has changed as the culture has changed (including look at syncretism). Finally, answer the following: Religion has its own separate distinction within the field of anthropology. However, anthropologists often study religions and rituals in different groups of people in conjunction with a study of their culture, political structure, class structure, and other ethnic distinctions. Explain why this might be important. In other words, how might religion and religious beliefs influence a groups culture, politics, class, etc. and vice-versa .You can complete this comparison using Google Slides, Drive, or other online product. Presentations will begin on Friday.
